Seeing smoke? Fort Jackson conducting prescribed burn

Acreage in Richland County, near Kershaw County line, set on fire to reduce wildfire hazard

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Residents and motorists near the Richland and Kershaw county lines, if you see smoke on the horizon, don't be too concerned. Fort Jackson is conducting a prescribed burn on 150 acres in Training Area 22E in the vicinity of Screaming Eagle, Messer's Pond, and Antietam roads on post.

The burn began around 9:30 a.m. and will continue into early afternoon. The controlled burn was set as a hazard reduction, to minimize the threat of possible wildfire situations in the area.

Smoke may be visible from I-20 and in the surrounding northern Richland County, southern Kershaw County areas.
