September was warmer than normal in the Midlands

Temperatures were warmer than normal during the month of September. The Midlands also received more rainfall than normal.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Many people associate the month of September with the start of the Fall season, cooler temperatures, and the leaves changing their colors. However, this September was warmer than normal. Human induced climate change has increased the odds of September being warmer than the long term averages. September on average now is 2.3 degrees warmer in the Midlands than it was in 1970.

Below are the high temperatures for each day in September this year. Days that are colored red indicate the high temperature for that day was above normal with the blue days having high temperatures that were below normal. The normal average high for the month of September is 85.7 degrees.

The average temperature for September this year was 76.7 degrees. That was 1.2 degrees above the normal average temperature for September. 

Although this September was warmer than normal, it isn't the warmest September the Columbia area has ever seen. The warmest average temperature ever recorded during the month of September was in the year 1925. The average temperature in September 1925 was 91 degrees!

Entering the month of October, temperatures will cool down as we head farther into the Fall season. The average temperature for the month of October is 64.6 degrees with the average high temperature being 76.5 degrees. 

So far the high temperatures in October for the Columbia SC area have been above normal. On October 1, 2024 the high temperature was 85 degrees. The normal high temperature for the Oct. 1 date is 82 degrees. On October 2, 2024 the high temperature was 86 degrees. The normal high temperature for the Oct. 2 date is 81 degrees.
