Roads, trees take a beating in Richland County from Tropical Storm Debby

Lower Richland travelers were faced with road blockages after the storm brought in winds and rain in the area.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Residents in Lower Richland Wednesday were forced to find ways around some busy roads in the area after flooding and fallen trees closed sections of streets or make them difficult to drive through.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said there was 83 road closures across the state, with most of them being in the Lowcountry.

One of those road closures was right here in Richland County in Lower Richland on Air Base Road, where the road was closed due to a "minor washout."

"They don't manage the road a lot," said nearby resident Robert Williams. "The grass is not cut. So if the grass is high, the water is gonna still stay in the road. I've seen it come all the way up to your knee area sometimes because of the lower spot. So it used to cover the whole road."

There were several flooded areas that cleared up throughout the day without causing closures, including on Congaree Road and Lost John Road.

Some residents said they were worries what the rest of the storms might bring,

"It's gonna be a lot of backup and potholes," said Parrish, who travels through several areas that flood, every day. "There's not a lot of detours."

Other roads in Richland County had fallen trees, including Circle Drive and William Janie Sims Circle. Both of those roads were cleared today.

Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said in a statement today, "We do anticipate some additional road closures as this event continues... we are closely monitoring the forecast and we are ready to respond to whatever the storm may bring."
