Showers and storms expected this afternoon

Some of the stronger storms could produce gusty, damaging wind gusts.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Shower and thunderstorm chances are on the rise over the next few days, leading to a wetter-than-normal week. After Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop to near or slightly below normal levels into early next week.

This afternoon, expect scattered showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall. Some storms may bring gusty, damaging winds. Temperatures will be slightly cooler but still hot, with heat index values nearing 105 degrees.

An upper-level trough is moving southward across the eastern U.S. This will bring southwest winds and high moisture levels. More widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop today, with locally heavy rain possible. Some storms could be strong, with the main threat being strong winds.

With increased cloud cover and rain, temperatures are forecast to be slightly cooler, in the mid-90s. However, the combination of heat and humidity will push heat index values to around 105 degrees. Although no heat advisory will be issued, it is important to take breaks and stay hydrated if spending time outdoors. Overnight lows will generally be in the middle 70s.

As a cold front approaches from the northwest on Thursday, it will bring more showers and thunderstorms. The front will provide instability, promoting the development of storms. With high moisture levels, locally heavy rain and flash flooding are possible. This pattern will continue into Friday as the front remains a trigger for storms.

Temperatures will be hot again on Thursday, with heat indices between 100 and 105 degrees, but still below heat advisory criteria. Behind the front, temperatures on Friday will be cooler, with highs ranging from the upper 80s in the west to low 90s in the east. Increased cloud cover will help keep heat index values below triple digits.

Sunset and some storm clouds this evening. And yes, it’s a little passing my bedtime. Haha

Expect daily chances of showers and thunderstorms through the weekend and into early next week. A continuous stream of moisture from the southwest will keep conditions wet, with the front moving to the south and upper-level disturbances continuing to influence the region. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur each day, with the threat of gusty winds and flash flooding.

Temperatures will be below or near normal, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and overnight lows in the mid-70s.
