COLUMBIA, S.C. — High pressure from the northeast will settle over the area, creating quiet weather. However, an easterly flow will bring in more moisture, which could result in light rain on tonight and Tuesday.
Rain chances increase by midweek as more moisture moves in from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing a stronger potential for showers. Throughout the forecast, temperatures are expected to stay warmer than usual.
Light showers are possible, especially in the Central Savannah River Area, with temperatures close to or slightly above average. High pressure centered over New England is extending down into the Southeast, helping to keep conditions relatively calm.
However, a gentle onshore breeze is bringing some clouds and light showers, mainly around Georgia and the Savannah River. Cloud cover is expected to stick around, keeping temperatures near seasonal norms, with highs ranging from the low to mid-70s.
As the day progresses, some drier air will move in, which should reduce the chances of rain in the afternoon. Tonight, clouds and moisture will increase again, with mild overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s.
By Tuesday, a combination of high pressure and a southerly flow will keep pushing moisture into the region, particularly across the southern Midlands. This could result in light showers across the area, although rainfall amounts are expected to be low.
The day will be mostly cloudy, keeping highs in the mid-70s to low 80s. Overnight, skies will remain cloudy with lows in the low to mid-60s, as more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico may bring a few more showers into the area.
A tropical system moving northwest from the Caribbean Sea into the Gulf of Mexico could bring moisture to the Southeast, leading to a stronger potential for rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Although it is uncertain how much rain will fall, areas in the western Midlands may receive the highest amounts.
Temperatures should remain above normal, though cloud cover and rain may provide some cooling. Looking towards the weekend, rain chances drop slightly, but temperatures are expected to stay warm for this time of year.
