Storms are possible today, great Mother's Day weekend weather ahead

Some of the storms could become strong or even severe. Damaging winds will be the main threat with any storms that do form, with hail and tornadoes being secondary.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Another round of showers and storms is possible today. Some of the storms could be strong or even severe, with the greatest threat being damaging wind gusts. The weather for the holiday weekend is expected to be great, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity levels. The clouds will return to South Carolina on Monday.

Some rain is possible early Friday in the southern half of South Carolina as a disturbance swings through. Any rain will be out of the area quickly. Partly cloudy skies are expected during the afternoon hours. Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s later today.

A cold front will approach the state later today. The latest forecast brings scattered thunderstorms to the area by 3 pm. Some of the storms could become strong or even severe. Damaging winds will be the main threat with any storms that do form, with hail and tornadoes being secondary threats.

Part of South Carolina is at a slight risk of severe weather today. According to the Storm Prediction Center, a slight risk of severe weather indicates that scattered severe storms are possible. A slight risk is represented by a yellow-shaded area on the map.

This means that short-lived, isolated, or scattered severe thunderstorms are possible, but not widespread. The main threats associated with a slight risk typically include damaging winds, large hail, and possibly a tornado or two, although the overall threat is lower compared to an enhanced or moderate risk.

The cold front will move through during the early evening hours. Cooler, drier air will spill into the state for the holiday weekend. Lows on Saturday will drop into the middle 50s. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the upper 70s. Mother’s Day will be sunny and warm, with highs in the lower 80s.

Normally, I don't care about a dew point forecast, but this shot of cooler, drier air will be very nice. You'll likely notice they difference over the weekend.
