Strong gusts of wind cause power outages, downed trees across the Midlands

Damaging wind gusts over 50 mph across the Midlands.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Severe weather has caused power outages across the Midlands.

A cold front triggered severe storms for about five to six hours Thursday afternoon and evening. However, as the storms moved out, the incoming cold front also brought gusty winds up to 30 to 40 miles an hour.

Those high winds caused weak trees to snap or uproot, causing them to fall on homes and powerlines.

As of 10 a.m., according to Dominion Energy, about 2,600 power outages are being reported across the state. At the peak of the outages, Dominion Energy was reporting about 17,600 outages at around 6:15 a.m. Friday morning.
