COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the first time in over three weeks, our weather will be dry this weekend in the Midlands!

Clear skies and a northerly breeze led to a cold start to the weekend with most places dropping into the 20s. Skies will remain clear and sunny this afternoon though temperatures will remain on the chilly side with highs in the low 50s.

These nice and cool conditions are all due to an area of high pressure, which will remain in control through Sunday. Sunday morning will be cold once again with most areas dropping below freezing. Afternoon highs will be a degree or two warmer with sunny skies remaining and winds shifting out of the southeast.

Unfortunately, the chance for rain returns for Monday, though it will not be a heavy, all day rain.

A cold front will move through on Monday bringing with it scattered showers. Rainfall totals will be around a quarter of an inch or less.

Conditions will improve Tuesday and through the middle of the week with clearing skies and warming temperatures. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to climb back above normal for the middle of the week. Wednesday and Thursday will be quite warm with highs approaching 70 degrees.

There is another small chance for rain again on Friday, though overall this week will be much drier with less total rainfall than the past few weeks.

So far this month, Columbia Metropolitan Airport has recorded 6.28" of rainfall. The total this meteorological winter, which runs from December 1st through the end of February, is just over 15 inches. That puts this season in 17th place for rainiest winters on record with about a week to go in the season.
