Toddler injured when tree crashes into Sumter home

The little boy had to be taken to the hospital after high winds sent a tree crashing down on his home.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter County officials say a toddler was injured after a tree fell on his home in the county.

The incident happened on Blanche Road in the Cherryvale neighborhood.

When the tree fell it essentially split the house in half. The tree trapped the 3-year-old boy, who was lying on a couch, inside the home.

Crews used chainsaws to cut the roof and tree and get to the child. EMS officials say the boy was unresponsive when they transported him by ambulance to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

The boy's exact condition is not known.

A wave of severe weather rolled through the Midlands Friday afternoon, bringing high winds and potentially spawning multiple tornadoes. The National Weather Service will conduct site surveys Saturday to determine if a tornado actually touched down.
