COLUMBIA, S.C. — As we near the peak of hurricane season, which historically is September 10th, the tropics are certainly becoming more active. Four separate systems are being monitored by the National Hurricane Center for potential tropical development.
The first system is the closest to the US. An area of low pressure near Florida is forecast to move off the Southeast coast over the next few days, where warm waters could help is strengthen. The NHC gives the system a 70% chance of development in the next five days.
If the system does develop, it would continue moving northeast and away from the US.
There are three other tropical waves in the Atlantic and coming off the coast of Africa that have low chances of development over the next five days.
The hurricane season has already been record breaking and extremely active. There have been four hurricanes so far, including category 4 hurricane Laura, which made landfall in Louisiana last week.
The next name on the list if any of these new systems develop will be Nana.
