COLUMBIA, S.C. — The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season began Monday, and right on cue, a new tropical system has formed.

As of late Monday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center officially named Tropical Depression Three in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

This storm formed on the first day of hurricane season for the Atlantic basin.

Coming from the remnants of Tropical Storm Amanda in the Pacific Ocean, the area of low pressure weakened over Guatemala, before regaining some strength Monday afternoon while moving north into the Gulf of Mexico.

Winds from Tropical Depression Three measured 30 miles per hour and the system is moving west-northwest at 7 miles per hour.

The depression is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador over the next few days.

A tropical storm warning is also in effect for portions of coastal Mexico.

Tropical Depression Three is forecast to meander in the southwestern Gulf through the middle of the week, with winds potentially increasing to 50 miles per hour.

If strengthening does occur, the depression will be named Tropical Storm Cristobal.

Currently, those states around the Gulf of Mexico should monitor the progress of this storm, but there are no immediate concerns for the United States with this depression.
