Tropical Update: National Hurricane Center monitoring an area in the Gulf of Mexico

The disturbance could briefly become a tropical depression later today or tonight.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Atlantic hurricane season began Saturday and there is an area in the tropics that is being watched.

A disorganized area of low pressure is producing showers and storms over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

The system is expected to move slowly northwest to the northeastern coast of Mexico.

The disturbance could become a tropical depression before moving inland later today or tonight.

The hurricane center gives the area of low pressure a 40% chance of further development over the next two days.

Even if the storm does not develop more, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of southeastern Texas and Louisiana through Thursday.

Interests along the Gulf of Mexico should follow the progress of this system.

We have already had one named storm this season. Andrea briefly formed in May. The next named storm this season will be Barry.

Hurricane season continues through November 30.
