Warm Tuesday ahead, but a dramatic cooldown is coming

Wind chills are expected to dip below 20° degrees Monday morning, which could approach cold weather advisory criteria.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Warm and dry weather is expected today. However, a cold front is set to bring a chance of showers on Wednesday, followed by a steady cooldown as we head into the weekend. By Sunday and early next week, temperatures are expected to be well below average, bringing the coldest air of the season.

Through Tonight

The fog this morning will gradually lift, giving way to partly to mostly sunny skies by later today. A few light showers are possible late tonight as a cold front approaches.

Daytime highs will reach the upper 60s to mid-70s. As the cold front approaches tonight, a few light showers may develop after midnight, with lows dropping into the lower to mid-50s.

Wednesday to Wednesday Night

An approaching cold front will bring a chance of rain on Wednesday. Some thunderstorms will be possible, but severe weather is not expected. High temperatures will be in the upper 60s to middle 70s for parts of the area.

The front will move through the area by late Wednesday night, bringing northwest winds by Thursday morning.

Thursday through Monday

Expect temperatures to steadily drop through the weekend, with the coldest air arriving by Sunday and Monday. Daytime highs may only climb into the middle 40s, with nighttime lows in the middle to lower 20s.

As cold air settles over the eastern U.S., a series of reinforcing fronts will bring progressively colder and drier air into the Southeast. By Saturday, temperatures will be significantly below average, with extremely dry air moving in.

Forecast models agree that the coldest air will arrive Sunday into Monday. Daytime highs may only reach the 40s, with overnight lows dropping into the 20s and possibly the teens in some areas.
