COLUMBIA, S.C. — A cold front moving into the area today will bring significant changes to the weather, including a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening.
Ahead of the front, moisture and cloud cover are increasing, creating a chance for occasional rainfall. While some areas may see heavier showers, rainfall totals are expected to remain light, with most locations receiving just a few hundredths to two-tenths of an inch.
Temperatures today will remain mild despite the clouds, with highs reaching the upper 60s to lower 70s. The scattered storms, driven by daytime heating and prefrontal activity, are expected to taper off as the front moves through tonight. Temperatures will drop overnight into the mid-40s to mid-50s, setting the stage for cooler weather in the coming days.
Thursday through Friday
Thursday and Friday will feel noticeably cooler, with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. A secondary system may bring light morning showers on Friday before colder air begins to settle in. Breezy conditions on Friday afternoon will accompany the temperature drop, signaling the start of a much cooler pattern for the weekend.
Saturday through Monday
The weekend and early next week will feature cold, dry conditions, with highs struggling to reach the upper 40s to low 50s. Overnight lows will drop significantly, with temperatures in the 20s expected on Sunday and Monday nights. Wind chills may dip into the teens, making it feel even colder.
Next week
As the week progresses, temperatures will gradually begin to warm, with highs climbing back into the 50s by midweek. This gradual warm-up is expected to continue as Christmas approaches, bringing more seasonal temperatures just in time for holiday festivities.
As of today, there will be a chance of rain on Christmas Day, but things can change this far out.
