WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — One section of a popular trail in West Columbia is closed due to rising waters and apparent flooding from the nearby river.
The city announced on Saturday that a portion of the West Columbia Riverwalk from Moffatt Street to the Gervais Street Bridge is temporarily closed.
The announcement comes amid a flood warning along the Congaree River in Columbia that remains in place until Monday morning. As of Saturday at 11 a.m., the stage of the river was 7.5 feet with the "action" stage being at 10 feet and the flood stage beginning at 19 feet. The river is expected to rise to about 10.1 feet by Saturday evening.
Anything above 10 feet can impact flood-prone areas near and downstream from Columbia. As reported in today's closure, portions of the Cayce and West Columbia River Walks can also be impacted.
Elsewhere, the Congaree River is projected to rise into the minor flood stage. The latest estimates suggest the river will rise to 15.5 feet at the Congaree National Park in Gadsden on Saturday night.
The Congaree is also expected to rise just into flood stage at Carolina Eastman at 115.1 feet on Saturday afternoon.
And the Saluda River is expected to rise to just below moderate flood stage at Chappells, cresting at 19.4 feet on Saturday night.
