Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A captain at Fort Jackson has been arrested and accused of having child pornography.
The base says Capt. William E. Johnson was arrested on August 14 by the Attorney General Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Johnson was charged with sexual exploitation of a minor in the third degree.
Johnson's arrest had been announced last week, but Fort Jackson acknowledged Monday that he was stationed there. In their statement five days ago, the attorney general's office said Johnson possessed multiple files of child pornography. He's facing a total of six third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor charges. Each charge is a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Fort Jackson says Johnson is the operations officer for the 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 165th Infantry Brigade at the base.
"The Fort Jackson command is fully cooperating with local authorities," the agency said in a statement. "We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and as a result, Capt. Johnson has been suspended from his duties until the charges have been adjudicated. Sexual misconduct is not tolerated and is inconsistent with Army values and the Army profession."
