COLUMBIA, S.C. — The newest decade will be here when the clock strikes midnight, and the Columbia Fire Department has all the tips to keep you safe as you ring in the new year.
Don't drink and drive
- If you are drinking during New Year's Eve, make sure to have a safe way of getting home. This plan could include a non-drinking designated driver, a taxi, or a ride-hailing service.
- If you know someone who has been drinking, don't let that person get behind the wheel.
- If you are hosting a party and are serving alcohol, make sure that guests have a safe and sober ride home.
- If you see someone you think might be driving impaired, dial *HP (*47) to report. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has jurisdiction anywhere in the state except for federal or military installations.
Tips for ride-share services and taxis
- Confirm the license plate of the vehicle and make sure the driver matches the name and photo in the app.
