Riverbanks Zoo mourns death of beloved giraffe Charlie

While Charlie is gone, his impact on the zoo and his species will live on.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announced on Friday that a beloved animal has died.

The zoo announced that Charlie, the giraffe described as a "wonderful ambassador for his species," died earlier in the week following health issues and a declining response to treatment. The zoo said in its announcement that Charlie was a visitor favorite at one of the facility's most interactive locations.

"When visiting the giraffe feeding platform, Charlie never failed to delight guests with his grace, charm, and love for lettuce," the zoo said.

However, while Charlie is gone, his impact on the zoo and his species will live on.

"He fathered seven calves, many of whom have gone on to have calves of their own," the zoo said.

Officials said this aligns with the species survival plans set forth by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

"Charlie will be dearly missed by Riverbanks staff and guests alike," the zoo said. "Our thoughts go out to the Animal Care staff during this difficult time."
