South Carolina's longest-serving State Trooper dies

Captain Dickerson died weeks after ending his 45-year career with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The South Carolina General Assembly honored him in 2018.

ANDERSON, S.C. — Just weeks after his retirement, South Carolina's longest-serving state trooper has died.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame announced that Captain Donald E. Dickerson died on Tuesday. Dickerson joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol in 1978 and retired on Dec. 31, 2023, after 45 years of service.

According to his obituary, Dickerson earned a state honor for his tenure in 2018 when the South Carolina General Assembly adopted a House Resolution honoring his then 40 years of service. He attained the rank of captain in 2015 and oversaw Troop 3, which covers Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties.

Dickerson's funeral will be on Saturday, Feb. 3, at New Prospect Baptist Church at 2503 Whitehall Road in Anderson. His burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His obituary invites law enforcement and first responders to participate in the procession from the church to his gravesite. Dickerson was 70.
