RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A fixture of the Richland County Sheriff's Department Mounted Patrol has died after years of serving the community.

The sheriff's department said Naked, a horse that served with the sheriff's department for the past 10 years, died on Wednesday at 29. The department said her death was related to medical complications.

"You would often see her at many community events, amongst some of the most notable are STSM Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and the Blythewood Rodeo, where Sheriff Lott enjoyed riding her," the sheriff's department said.

Officials said the horse got the name Naked because they would often use it for public relations purposes by saying "Come see Sheriff Lott ride Naked."

The department said Naked was a great conversation starter, especially for children who would pet her.

"She was so gentle and loved being around people," the department said.

The department said she was buried in a pasture she loved.
