Hometown star named Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year

The South Carolina signee has received a host of major awards, and now, she has added a national honor that highlights athletics, grades and character.

CAMDEN, S.C. — With Camden on spring break, Joyce Edwards headed to the gym Wednesday during lunch hour to get some work in on the court. She wanted to stay sharp for her upcoming All-Star games.

But when she walked in, Edwards knew something was up when she saw a small crowd in the arena.

The surprise featured two-time WNBA All-Star and Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally, who greeted Joyce with the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year trophy.

Edwards was then greeted by her family, teammates, and Camden dignitaries, who were part of the surprise celebration.

The #2 rated prospect for the Class of 2024, Edwards is a South Carolina signee who capped off her hoops career at Camden by helping the Bulldogs win their second consecutive state championship. She will be playing in the April McDonald's All-American Game in Houston.

A former News19 Player of the Week, Joyce has a grade point average well above 5.0. When she arrives on campus later this year, she will enroll in USC's Honors College.
