Investigators: Alvin S. Glenn employee punched inmate in face after court hearing

It's the third known violent incident to occur in the jail so far this week with stabbings also reported on previous days.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — An Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center employee is facing two serious charges after the alleged attack on an inmate.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, 25-year-old Martavius Smith was arrested on Friday for an incident that happened on April 5 following a bond court hearing.

Investigators said Smith was initially serving in his capacity as a detention center employee and assisting with bound court appearances at the jail.

However, after a hearing, Smith allegedly got into an argument with a 41-year-old detainee who he later struck in the face with his fist as they continued to argue.

Smith now faces charges of misconduct in office and assault and battery in the third degree. He's since been booked into the same jail.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department, which does not run the jail, is also investigating two other incidents of violence at the jail - stabbings that occurred on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
