'He’s still waking up crying' | Parents speak out after arrests in shooting that left Richland County child wounded

The victim in the shooting is just 11 years old.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One of the two suspects charged in a shooting that left an 11-year-old boy wounded in northeast Richland County went before a judge Friday.

Jaylen Perry, 19, was in bond court on a charge of attempted murder and shooting a firearm into a home. A judge denied Perry's request to bond out of jail on house arrest.

He and 17-year-old Jamal Eichelberger were arrested Thursday by Richland County deputies for a shooting that took place on Summit Terrace Court on March 10. The shooting injured the 11-year-old, who was watching television on his couch when bullets came flying into the home.

The victim's parents were at the hearing. They spoke with News19 but requested to be anonymous.

"Our son is 11 years old; he hasn't even reached puberty yet," the victim's mother said. "Yet he has a bullet hole in his leg that he has to deal with. He's still dealing with night terrors. He's still waking up crying in the middle of the night."

Walking into the bond hearing Friday, the boy's mother said she was looking for Perry to get his bail denied. According to the victim's parents in their victim's statement, the actions taken after the alleged shooting showed no remorse.

"Apparently, they've been on social media rapping and posting about it, making a mockery of it," she said. "Not necessarily my son per se, but the intended targeted house."

She says she wants her son to live a normal life.

"He's constantly worrying if someone's going to come back and try to shoot again or get him and he should be able to enjoy being a kid and not have to worry about something like this," the mother said.

Eichelberger was denied bond on Thursday.
