COLUMBIA, S.C. — An 11-year-old is home tonight after being shot on Sunday in northeast Columbia. News 19 spoke with the family, who did not want to be identified because the shooter has not been arrested.
“The real person who was the hero was God cause he saved me that day,” the boy said.
The 11-year-old victim is recovering after Richland County deputies say a shooter in a white Nissan Altima shot into three homes on Summit Terrace Court, including his. They say the boy was sitting on the couch when the shooting started.
“I went to Netflix, I was scrolling cause I was trying to look for a movie cause there’s so many movies to pick, and then I felt something hurting on my leg and when I looked I saw a hole in my leg,” he said.
The boy says he ran to his 12-year-old sister when he realized he was shot.
“I grabbed a shirt and wrapped it around his leg to try to stop the bleeding and apply pressure to it. I saw it in a movie. It was a survival movie,” she said.
While that happened inside the house, the boy's mother was outside. She says she saw the shooting happen and jumped into action.
“And so I followed behind them to get their license plate. Once they saw I was behind, they started speeding up, so I just followed behind them close enough to get their license tag,” she said.
The boy says he would like to see gun violence end, "because it’s very scary, 'cause when I was shot in my leg, I was very scared, and I thought I was going to pass away.”
No one else was injured in the incident.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers anonymously in any of the following ways:
