Second arrest in Sumter murder case; Adams charged with murder

Authorities are still looking for a juvenile connected to the case.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter Police have made a second arrest in a weeks-long murder investigation, authorities announced on Tuesday.

According to police, 20-year-old Fernando Quintez Adams of Sumter was arrested on Monday in Richland County by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Adams was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Tavares Keiwaun McFadden and the injury of his passenger. The first suspect, 19-year-old Curtis Jefferson of Mayesville, was arrested on May 29 and was also charged with murder and attempted murder.

Both arrests come following an early morning Memorial Day shooting near the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive. Preliminary information suggested that the victims were in a car stopped at a traffic light when someone drove up alongside them and fired a gun before speeding away.

Authorities are still looking for a juvenile who knows Adams. However, due to his age, his name is not being released.

Police said the investigation is still underway, and anyone with information can contact them at 803-436-2700. A reward of up to $5,000 is still available for anyone providing information that leads to an arrest.
