IRMO, S.C. — An Irmo Police officer has been fired after an investigation into the removal of political signs.

In a statement, Police Chief Bobby Dale said that authorities received information that Officer Lee Haley was involved in removing political signs recently reported stolen by candidate Gabriel Penfield. Dale said an internal affairs investigation launched Friday morning led to Haley's termination.

"We hold our officers accountable, especially when they go against our core values of integrity, professionalism, and dependability," Chief Dale said in a statement.

Dale said the investigation has been turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) if the victim chooses to press charges.
