ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A man shot while driving from an event at Claflin University on Wednesday has been identified as a member of the university's administration.
An incident report from the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Orangeburg on Wednesday just before 9 p.m., where they spoke with a shooting victim, now identified by the university as Dr. Leroy A. Durant. Durant is the Vice President of Student Development and Services at Claflin University.
In the incident report, deputies said the victim stated he was leaving a program at Claflin University when he turned onto Belleville Road from Chestnut Street. He told deputies he passed Mingo Street, heard a loud noise, and "started feeling lightheaded and dizzy."
The incident report states he then noticed blood coming from his head and drove to the hospital. The report said the victim was leaving a Computed Tomography (CT) Scan room when deputies arrived, and his injury was described as a "through and through" with no damage to the skull.
Investigators examined the victim's car and found a bullet hole in the back windshield, a graze point on a tail light and another on a driver's side quarter panel. Deputies also found shell casings near the intersection of U.S. 33 and Chestnut Road and temporarily blocked the roads to investigate.
The university said Durant was released from the hospital. In a statement, the university said Durant has been serving the university and Orangeburg community for more than 22 years.
