Motorcyclist killed in crash that led to DUI charge in Sumter County, SCHP says

While attempting to pass a vehicle, authorities said a truck hit a motorcyclist sitting in the median.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators have charged a driver with driving under the influence following a deadly crash in Sumter County on Friday night.

Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around  11:35 p.m. at the intersection of South Carolina 441 (Patriots Parkway) and U.S. 76 (Broad Street). Miller said a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck attempted to pass a 2004 Nissan Titan pickup truck while heading south on Patriots Parkway.

While attempting to pass the other truck, authorities said the Ford struck a motorcyclist sitting in the median. Trooper Miller said the driver of the Ford received injuries that were not life-threatening. However, the motorcyclist, identified by the Sumter County Coroner's Office as 25-year-old Mckae Kristopher Carnes-Thompson of Eastover, died at the scene.

Miller said the driver of the Ford truck was arrested on a felony charge of driving under the influence, resulting in death.

The crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
