Two charged in deadly August Sumter hotel shooting that claimed two young lives

One suspect faces murder charges in the fatal Sleep Inn hotel shooting that killed Saquan Logan and Tyriq Demari Spann.

SUMTER, S.C. — Two men have been charged in connection with a deadly shooting at a Sumter hotel in August.

Sumter Police charged two suspects from Wedgefield, 19-year-old Tavion Melki Mickens and 23-year-old Toney Williams Jr., in connection with a shooting that happened on Aug. 18 at the Sleep Inn Hotel on Broad Street. The shooting left 20-year-old Saquan Logan of Sumter and 19-year-old Tyriq Demari Spann of Dalzell dead.

Police said Mickens was already in a Georgia jail when he was identified in connection with the case due to charges of speeding and possession of a weapon. He was extradited to Sumter on Sept. 7 and now faces two counts of murder and one of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Williams is accused of helping Mickens cover up evidence and elude police. He was arrested on Aug. 27 and charged with accessory after the fact of murder. Police are still offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to additional arrests. Tipsters can call Sumter Police at 803-436-2700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
