Suspect in hit-and-run, police pursuit now facing new charges in Columbia

Vergil Glover to remain at Alvin S Glenn Detention Center after April 15 incident

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 56-year-old Columbia man is facing new charges a day after his arrest for hit-and-run and leading law enforcement on a slow speed pursuit through Columbia neighborhoods.

Vergil D. Glover was initially charged with two counts of hit-and-run of an attended vehicle, failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, three counts of assault on an officer while resisting arrest, reckless driving, driving under the influence (DUI), driving under suspension, and open container.

Glover's trouble began around 3 p.m. at the EZ Spot gas station on W Academy Street, off Farrow Road in north Columbia. He allegedly hit two vehicles at the gas station then failed to comply with Columbia Police (CPD) officers on the scene by driving away. Officers followed Glover at a slow rate of speed through several Columbia neighborhoods before arriving at a house on S. Pickens in Rosewood. After arriving at the home, about four miles away from the gas station, Glover refused to get out of his vehicle.

When he did eventually get out of the vehicle, Glover was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. A CPD officer was also taken to the hospital for a non-life threatening injury to his hand.

Glover was booked into Alvin S Glenn Detention Center (ASG) Monday evening. During a bond hearing Tuesday morning, a judge revoked a previous bond set for him on charges from Richland County Sheriff's Department and will remain at ASG until another bond hearing in General Sessions Court at a later date. The new charges brought by CPD against Glover are two counts of assault and battery, first degree.
