NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say three people have been hospitalized following a shooting early Sunday morning in Newberry County.
According to the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, the 911 center received several calls around 2:40 a.m. regarding gunfire on Brown Chapel Circle. Dispatchers determined from the calls that people were wounded.
Arriving deputies found two people at the scene with gunshot wounds to the lower torso and learned a third victim was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital by private vehicle. That victim had multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office added that a deputy applied a tourniquet to one victim as other first responders arrived. Newberry County Emergency Medical Services took one victim to the helipad at Little Mountain Fire and Rescue, and the other was taken by ambulance. One of the three was airlifted from the hospital.
“It appears that was some kind of gathering there, and we don’t know whether there was a party or it looks like maybe an illegal business was being run at that location," Sheriff Lee Foster said. "We’re still investigating that. But it looks like two groups of people got into a confrontation, and then firearms were introduced."
The sheriff's office said it didn't have details regarding the condition of the victims and said those at the scene were not cooperating with the investigation.
