COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County officials say a detainee has been found dead at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the county's jail facility.
The county government issued a statement Monday saying the man was found unresponsive in his cell around 11:15 a.m. on Monday, July 22.
According to the county, the jail's on-site medical team immediately responded to the cell and began life-saving measures but those were unsuccessful. The detainee did not have a cellmate at the time of his discovery.
They did not give any indication on how they believe the man may have died.
County officials said they were "saddened" by the death. They did not identify the detainee and said the Richland County Coroner's Office was investigating.
This is the second known inmate death at the jail this month. Back on July 9, 56-year-old Robert L Moore of Columbia was discovered unresponsive in his cell by a detention center nurse during a medical pass. Like this latest death, officials said Moore also did not have a cellmate.
