NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are investigating a boat crash on Lake Murray, the Newberry County Sheriff's Office confirms.
Sheriff Lee Foster said the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is the primary investigating agency, but he confirmed that there was a crash involving two boats that left three people injured. Foster said the boat crash was related to a fishing tournament.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources later said that the crash was at what's known as Little Gap near Dreher Island. There were two people inside each boat at the time of the crash and confirmed that the victims were taken to a local hospital.
SCDNR has not given any information on what they believe led to the crash. The agency did pull the two damaged boats to shore and spent much of the afternoon inspecting them.
The crash came during a practice round of the Lake Murray College Series, a Bassmaster fishing tournament.
"B.A.S.S. is investigating the incident, and more information will be made public as it becomes available," organizers said in a statement.
The tournament is still scheduled to be held Friday and Saturday from Dreher Island State Park.
