COLUMBIA, S.C. — Wade Campbell and his family have been regular visitors to Lake Murray for over a decade, drawn by its scenic beauty and community spirit. Last Saturday, their holiday plans took an unexpected turn when they encountered a distressed boat on the lake.
"While we were heading to watch fireworks, we noticed a boat carrying young people riding unusually low in the water," Campbell recounted. "We approached and offered assistance, but they assured us it was a minor issue."
Despite their reassurances, Campbell couldn't shake a feeling of unease and decided to keep an eye on the boat from a distance. "Within minutes, my wife alerted me that they had capsized," he said.
Campbell and another nearby boat rushed to aid the stranded group, successfully rescuing everyone from the water and towing the half-sunken vessel to shore. The incident occurred near the mouth of Dreher, a heavily trafficked area during holidays.
Joseph Santiago of the Department of Natural Resources emphasized the importance of boat safety inspections. "No matter how often you use your boat, ensure it's in good working order and equipped with necessary safety gear," Santiago advised. This includes life jackets, throw ropes, fire extinguishers, and sound signaling devices.
For those planning to take to the water this Fourth of July, the SCDNR will conduct courtesy boat inspections across the state. "Bring your boat to your local boat ramp for a thorough inspection," Santiago encouraged. "Our officers will ensure you have all required equipment."
Reflecting on the rescue, Campbell urged lake-goers to stay calm in emergencies and seek assistance when needed. "There's a strong sense of community out here," he said. "Everyone is willing to lend a hand."
