CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have released initial details regarding a body found in the Congaree River on Saturday afternoon.
Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers and Coroner Donnie Porth released a joint statement on Thursday announcing that the man found dead along the river in the Sandy Run area was 45-year-old Eddie Leon Norris of Leesville.
Authorities said Newberry Pathology completed an autopsy on Wednesday. Norris's death and the incident that led to it are still under investigation, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Lab is handling a toxicology report that hasn't been released.
Sheriff Summers said that investigators have accounted for Norris's location until early December.
"Based on the evidence, so far, we do not believe there is any foul play involved," Summers said in a statement. "But my investigators will continue to work closely with the Coroner's Office until we have determined the cause and manner of death."
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office urged anyone with additional information about Norris or the incident to call the Investigation Division at 803-874-2741.
