"Tragic accident": No charges filed in drowning death of Columbia 5-year-old

5-year-old Capri Robinson died after being found unresponsive at a pool at Wildewood South Apartments off Sparkleberry Lane on Sunday, May 26.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — No charges will be filed in the drowning death of a 5-year child in northeast Columbia over Memorial Day weekend, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

5-year-old Capri Robinson of Columbia died after being found unresponsive at a pool at Wildewood South Apartments off Sparkleberry Lane on Sunday, May 26.

Deputies say the investigation found that the drowning was a tragic accident.

“With summer upon us we have to be vigilant whenever our children are close to a body of water,” said Sheriff Lott. “This is a devastating illustration of how quickly a tragedy can occur.”

According to an incident report from the sheriff's department, deputies were dispatched around 6 p.m. on May 26. Deputies said the child was found in the pool area and was not breathing when they arrived.

Responding units and Columbia firefighters began rendering first aid to the child. The child was then taken to the hospital by ambulance along with a sheriff's department escort. Deputies said Robinson was pronounced dead at the hospital.
