ELGIN, S.C. — Police said a minor victim is recovering after Saturday's shooting in Elgin, which ended with multiple suspects in custody.
Mayor Melissa Emmons said on Saturday that the shooting happened on a street in the town limits and that police were investigating and gathering evidence. Elgin Police later elaborated that the incident occurred at the intersection of Kelly Street and Ontario Road off Smyrna Road around 5:45 p.m.
Police said the victim, described only as a minor female, was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for wounds that they didn't believe were life-threatening. Officials said the surgery went well.
Following the shooting, police said three suspects were taken into custody. The mayor said a vehicle tied to the incident was also abandoned in the IGA grocery store parking lot, leading to a police presence there.
Elgin Police investigators haven't yet released details regarding what preceded the shooting but said it appeared to be some type of altercation. Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said deputies are assisting the department.
