KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — A magnitude 2.8 earthquake may have gotten all the attention on Saturday, but a second smaller earthquake also shook the area before the day was over.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed on Sunday that a magnitude 1.3 earthquake rumbled the ground under the same area near Lugoff and Elgin on Saturday around 11:40 p.m.
This typically falls far below what most people can feel but still registers on seismographs. Fewer than 10 people reported feeling the earthquake - far fewer than the nearly 1,000 residents who noticed being rattled by the magnitude 2.8.
The earthquake was centered along Haig Creek near Doby's Mill Elementary School, about 1.3 miles southwest of the larger one earlier in the day.
