Man wins South Carolina mayor's race on write-in vote

Ballard plans to increase law enforcement and update local senior center during his time as mayor.

SPRINGFIELD, S.C. — The town of Springfield swore in their new mayor Leroy Ballard Monday evening.

Troy Thomas was the only name on the ballot for mayor. However, Ballard was written in by more people and won.

Now that he's in office, Ballard said he hopes to restore the Hattie Wood Senior Center to its previous glory.

"I would like to see that be kind of an all-in-one senior center where we actually have a doctor that can come in,” said Ballard. “Set up a clinic so that the seniors of that community instead of going to Orangeburg or Aiken they can actually go to this building here if they have fever, cough minor stuff. As well as trying to set up a computer lab for continuing education for adults"

Ballard says another item on his agenda will be to increase law enforcement in the town of Springfield.

"As far as the police department we have just one full time cop, we had two part time they left and went on to another department,” said Ballard. “I am hoping to get at least three full time cops hopefully two part time. That way when people do come through the town. They can see that we do have that 24/7 presence with the police department."

William Charlton is the Springfield chief of police, he says there will be change coming to Springfield.

"There's a lot of people out here that's live here their whole life so they're used to small town Springfield but it's inevitable that we're going to grow,” said Charlton. “We're going to take baby steps in making that happen and we just ask for their support."
