SC State readies for homecoming

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Getting on to campus at South Carolina State University will look a bit different starting Friday. New safety measures have been added to ensure a fun homecoming weekend.

Metal detectors, a clear bag policy, and random vehicle checks will occur on the South Carolina State University campus beginning Friday for this weekend's homecoming events.

Photo identification for adults and South Carolina State University IDs for students will also be required to enter campus.

Katricia Green, a student at South Carolina State University, said this will be a busy weekend, and extra security will help to put minds at ease.

"Homecoming, we have a lot of parties and stuff and I will feel safer with police officers everywhere because you know we do be partying a lot round here," said Green. "I don't want to go to a party when you have to realize there's shooting, fighting."

There will be 55 officers and emergency medical services on campus, along with security checkpoints at the entrances.

Lamaiyah Henderson is a freshman at South Carolina State University and says, and she says this was a necessary precaution.

"It was definitely necessary because I know at a lot of schools there's a lot of shootings and a lot of people are getting hurt, said Henderson."

Henderson says the extra security makes having a good weekend easier.

"The new security measures make me feel more safe, especially for the events that we're having, said Henderson. "Not having to think about like what may happen or looking over my shoulder 24-7, but yeah, I definitely feel safer."
