SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Multiple agencies are investigating a suspicious death in Sumter County after a group of hunters discovered a body wrapped in a tarp off a rural road.
Coroner Robbie Baker in Sumter County said the discovery happened around 10 a.m. about 30 feet off Cimmaron Road near the Rembert and Pisgah communities. He said a group of hunters noticed a smell and, upon finding the tarp, pulled it back. tarp. Baker said they concluded that something in the tarp was dead and called law enforcement.
Authorities have since confirmed that the contents of the tarp were human remains that Baker believes were at the location for at least a week but possibly longer. He said the Sumter County Sheriff's Office requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division process the scene.

Baker said the area where the body was found was in a sparsely populated region of the county with only a handful of houses along the nearby road.
At this time, very little is known about whose remains are inside the tarp. Baker said the wrapped body was taken from the scene, and an autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on Tuesday. Baker said that would help determine the person's approximate age, height, weight, sex and race. However, they're hoping that someone in the public has information to help identify the deceased.
