Infant who died in Friday morning fire in Sumter County identified

Crews from both Kershaw and Sumter counties responded to the fire.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — An infant has died following a major house fire on the border between Sumter and Kershaw counties, officials say.

A spokesperson for the Sumter Fire Department said the fire happened in the 8800 block of Black River Road, and crews were called to the scene at around 6:20 a.m. Due to the proximity to the Kershaw County line, members of Kershaw County Fire Service responded as well.

Many details are still limited, but Sumter Fire officials said there were five people in the mobile home, and four were taken from the scene with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The Sumter County Coroner's Office said a fifth person, identified as seven-month-old Oaklenn Wooten, died from injuries she sustained in the fire. An autopsy is planned for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was also requested at the scene, which officials said is standard practice when an incident involves a child's death.

"SLED will be leading the investigation, and we will await their findings to learn the cause of the fire,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said.
