SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Residents say they are concerned after two deadly shootings in Sumter County just 24 hours apart.
Monday morning, 32-year-old Tavares McFadden died in a drive-by shooting and one other person was sent to the hospital.
The incident took place early on Memorial Day around 7:30 am at the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive.
Sumter Police have released a surveillance photo of a vehicle that they’re looking for in connection with the crime but haven’t said yet what they think led up to the shooting.
They also haven’t said if they know who may be a suspect.
Sumter resident Jerry Lee says a lot needs to be done.
“It’s crazy. I mean young people are running around with these guns, that’s uncalled for. There’s no need for that," said Lee. "I just say Sumter County Sheriff's Department, police department needs to tighten up what they’re doing.”
Melinda Musgrove, who lives in Sumter says residents are concerned.
“Residents do not feel safe in this county. People are breaking into houses, stores and stuff, just killing people," said Musgrove. "Even drive-bys and I’m scared you know, I know other women are scared.”
On Sunday, 61-year-old Joan Mogensen was found dead in her home on North Saint Paul Church Road after being shot.
Sumter County Sheriff’s investigators haven’t said yet what led up to her death.
But Musgrave said more needs to be done to protect women.
“They need to do something to protect the women, you know," said Musgrave. "Because some women are so scared, they don’t want to do nothing or anything, and I don’t know what to tell them, you know, besides keep their head up and be strong.”
