Woman charged with felony DUI in death of South Carolina mayor

The suspect had been in the hospital since the crash

SUMMERTON, S.C. — A woman is facing charges related to the fatal car crash that took the life of Summerton Mayor Tony Junious

Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday that 33-year-old Toni Singleton of Summerton is charged with felony DUI.

Singleton had been in the hospital since the crash, which happened back on January 27. Last Saturday, she was released from the hospital, charged, and then booked at the Clarendon County Jail.

Bennett said the crash happened when a 2010 Chevrolet Impala heading west on Governor Richardson Road and a 2013 Dodge Charger heading north on Liberty Hill Road collided. Junious, the driver and only occupant of the Chevrolet sedan, was taken to McLeod Health Clarendon for treatment but died.

Singleton, the driver of the Dodge Charger, was also injured and taken to McLeod Health Clarendon.

Junious, 48, made history in 2022 as the first Black mayor of Summerton and was remembered in the days since the crash for his lasting impression on the town and community at large. He'd previously served on school boards in Clarendon County.

Trooper Bennett said the crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
