SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Two suspects wanted for the murder of a Rembert man surrendered themselves to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday morning.
Terone Justin McCray and Nia Laprece Wright had been subjects of a manhunt since they allegedly shot and killed Jaquen Marquel Jefferson of Rembert in a car on Sunday morning, August 4, 2024.
McCray and Wright made arrangements to turn themselves into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, where they were arrested and served warrants for murder.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. on Sunday on Dinkins Mill Road in the Rembert community.
After interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, deputies learned that before the shooting incident, the suspects allegedly argued with the victim, made threats, assaulted the victim, and brandished firearms in the parking lot of an area establishment.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis commended Sumter County deputies and U.S. Marshals for their work that brought the suspects out of hiding. “The suspect's actions Sunday morning not only forever changed the lives of Mr. Jefferson and his family, but also their lives.”
McCray and Wright were transported to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and are awaiting a bond hearing.
