Victim identified in Garners Crossing shooting

Authorities said a fight preceded the shooting.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal shooting at an apartment complex on Garners Ferry Road on July Fourth.

Jose Ocasio Torres, 33, of Columbia, died after being shot at Garners Crossing on July Fourth, according to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford.

According to a statement released on Friday, 50-year-old Pedro Leon-Rodriguez was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime following a shooting that happened at Garners Crossing Apartments in the 7600 block of Garners Ferry Road.

Authorities said that just before 8 p.m., Columbia officers arrived at the apartment, where they found a 33-year-old man who had been shot and later died. Further investigation and witness accounts determined the shooting followed a fight between the two men. 

The shooting was one of two fatal shootings in Columbia on July Fourth.
