Lottery winners pick '4' in South Carolina Pick 4 game, leading to record $8.3 million in payouts

Lottery officials are cautioning winners to be patient due to the record number of winners.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Several South Carolina lottery winners got a very pleasant surprise on Friday night by taking the name of a lottery game literally.

The winning lottery numbers for the Pick 4 game on Friday night were 4-4-4-4, meaning anyone who picked those numbers has a nice prize waiting. Depending on the price paid for the tickets, winners took home either $2,500 or $5,000 per play. In total, the lottery paid out more than $8.3 million on 3,351 winning tickets.

Winners can claim their prizes by mail or go to the Lottery Claims Center in Columbia. However, lottery officials cautioned that visitors should expect a long wait beginning Monday and continuing through the middle of the week because of the many winners.

Lottery officials said wait times will be posted at SCEducationLottery.com and on the lottery's social media accounts. Winners have 180 days from the time of the drawing to claim their winnings.

Officials said the odds of winning the Pick 4 game with a straight play are one in 10,000. As for the numbers being 4-4-4-4, officials said this was a lottery first.
