COLUMBIA, S.C. — A bill allowing alcohol delivery to South Carolina homes now heads to the state Senate.
The legislation would let people over 21 order beer, wine or liquor directly from retailers or through third-party apps like Doordash and Uber Eats.
Supporters of the bill have emphasized the importance of accessibility and convenience. Industry giants, including Doordash, Shipt, and Total Wine, have been pressing for the changes for years.
At least 30 other states allow these deliveries.
However, opponents raise concerns about potential consequences, including possible robberies as well as irresponsible drinking behaviors.
Now that the bill has passed the House, it heads next to the Senate floor for a final vote. There is no word yet on when that will happen.
