Fatal weekend in Orangeburg: Two juveniles killed in collision

Two juveniles killed in an Orangeburg collision, as officials urge safer driving amid a surge in state traffic deaths.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — The investigation continues into a traffic collision that claimed the lives of two juveniles after a fatal weekend in Orangeburg.

It was one of three crashes that killed five people in Orangeburg County on Saturday.

Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said driving those vehicles on the highway is illegal.

“Of course, four-wheelers are not permitted on the roadways because they don’t have insurance or registration,” Glover said.

She said that the law had been in effect for a while.

“ATVs [all-terrain vehicles] are illegal on the roadways because it is designed for off-road use," she said. "Now, if you are riding the ATV on private property, that’s fine.”

So far this year, there have been nearly 600 traffic fatalities in South Carolina -- a number that is far too high for it only being September, officials said.

Glover said drivers need to be more cautious on the roadways.

“We always ask people to drive the posted speed limit, always wear your seatbelt, make sure if you have kids in the vehicle make sure they are in the proper child seat as well.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.
