ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Two juveniles are dead following a crash involving an all-terrain vehicle and a tractor-trailer - the third deadly crash in Orangeburg County in 12 hours.
According to Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 4:20 p.m. on Saturday along U.S. 601 near Scenic Drive about five miles north of Orangeburg.
Miller said the crash occurred when a 2020 Kawasaki ATV attempted to cross the road and was struck by a northbound 2024 Freightliner truck pulling a trailer. Two juveniles on the ATV were killed in the crash. The driver, who was the truck's sole occupant, was not injured.
This is the third deadly crash in Orangeburg County since the day began, bringing the total number of traffic deaths in the county on Saturday to five.
The first crash happened around 4:20 a.m. on eastbound I-26 about five miles east of Bowman and allegedly involved a driver going the wrong way. The crash killed two drivers and injured one passenger. The second crash happened on U.S. 21 north of Rowesville around 7 a.m. and involved a single vehicle. One person died.
The crashes are under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
